This year’s March Madness tournament has been a hectic and historic event. For the first time in tournament history, a number 16 seed defeated a promising top-seeded college. The unlikely UMBC Retrievers beat Virginia, 74-54 in the first round of the tournament. But the upsets continued. The lowly 11-seeded team Loyola Chicago has made it to the final four, and maybe more to come. Their “team nun”, Sister Jean,98, has given them the inspiration to lead team all the way up to the final four. “This is the way it is supposed to be,” said Loyola coach Porter Moser. After beating Kansas State in the Elite Eight, they now face Michigan in the first game of the final four.
On the other side of the bracket, the favored Villanova demolished Texas Tech in the Elite Eight, 59-71. They will now face #1 seeded Kansas who slipped past the fresh, young, #2 seeded Duke in overtime, 85-81. Many say that game should have been the finals of the tournament. It featured two great teams fighting for the last spot in the final four. It was a 1 point deficit most of the game, with Duke leading by three at the half. There were 6 lead changes in the last 6 minutes of the game. Kansas just pulled it off, but they are considered one of the weaker number one seeds in tournament history. Kansas, Villanova, Loyola Chicago, and Michigan face off in the final four. Take the poll to show who you think will win. What a great March Madness tournament this has been.
